📖 A Thought from My Personal Meditation (Exodus 7–10) – Part 1
As I was meditating on Exodus chapters 7–10, one question came to my mind:
Why did God harden Pharaoh’s heart?
God repeatedly commanded Pharaoh through Moses, “Let My people go.” Yet at the same time, God had already declared that Pharaoh would resist and that Pharaoh’s heart would be hardened.
When we read these chapters carefully, we notice three different expressions:
- Pharaoh hardened his own heart.
- Pharaoh’s heart became hardened.
- God hardened Pharaoh’s heart.
This does not mean Pharaoh wanted to obey God but was forced to disobey. Pharaoh had already chosen pride and rebellion. Pharaoh’s very first response was:
“Who is the LORD, that I should obey His voice?”
Exodus 5:2
Again and again, God gave Pharaoh opportunities to humble himself. Yet Pharaoh continually rejected God and hardened his own heart. Eventually, God confirmed Pharaoh in the path of stubbornness that Pharaoh had already chosen.
Why?
God Himself gives the answer:
“But indeed for this purpose I have raised you up, that I may show My power in you, and that My name may be proclaimed in all the earth.”
Exodus 9:16
God used even Pharaoh’s rebellion to reveal His power and make His name known among the nations.
Years later, when the Israelites came near Jericho, Rahab testified that the people had heard what God had done in Egypt and at the Red Sea. Because of God’s mighty works, the hearts of the people melted with fear (Joshua 2:9–11).
This reminds us that God always has a greater purpose than we can see. Even when our enemies seem to prosper or refuse to change, God remains in control. He can use every situation—even opposition—to accomplish His perfect plan and bring glory to His name.
