📖 A Thought from My Personal Meditation (Exodus 21)
Today, I was meditating on Exodus chapter 21. This chapter contains several laws and principles related to justice, responsibility, human relationships, punishment, servants, and various other aspects of life. Over the next five days, we will meditate on some important spiritual truths from this chapter.
As I read this chapter, one important thought came to my mind:
❓ Why did God give the Law?
In the previous chapters, we see that God first delivered the Israelites from Egypt. After bringing them out of slavery and bondage, He gave them His commandments and laws.
✨ This order is very important.
God did not give the Law so that the Israelites could earn salvation through their own works. God first delivered them. After that, He taught them how to live as His people.
The Law was a guide for their lives. It taught them how to live with one another, how to behave in different situations, how to avoid sin, and how to remain separate from the sinful ways of the nations around them.
🌿 God called the people He had redeemed for Himself to live differently.
This is also a very important truth for us as Christians.
We were not saved because we perfectly obeyed God’s commandments.
✝️ We are saved by the grace of God through faith in Jesus Christ.
However, the fact that we are saved by grace does not mean that the Word of God is no longer relevant to our lives. Grace is not permission to continue living in sin.
❤️ The same grace that saves us also teaches us to live for God.
The Law teaches us certain things about the character of God. It shows us that God is holy. It teaches us that our actions affect others and that we are responsible for our actions. It also gives principles related to justice, honesty, relationships, and life in society.
But the Law has a limitation.
⚠️ The Law can reveal sin, restrain sin, and show us how God desires human beings to live. But the Law itself cannot save us from sin.
The Law shows us what is right and wrong. It shows us the standard of holiness. It warns us about the consequences of sin. But the Law cannot completely transform a sinful heart.
🪞 The Law is like a mirror. A mirror can show us that our face is dirty, but the mirror cannot wash our face.
In the same way, the Law can show us our sin, but it cannot cleanse us from sin.
✝️ Only Jesus Christ can save us from sin.
Only His sacrifice can bring forgiveness of sins. Only His grace can reconcile us to God. Only the Holy Spirit can transform our hearts and enable us to live a life that pleases God.
But after Christ has saved us, we should not continue living as though nothing has changed.
🌿 We are called to live as a distinct people.
The Israelites were called to live differently from the nations around them. In the same way, as Christians, we are called to live differently from the world. Not because we are better than others, but because we belong to Christ.
📖 The question is not merely:
❓ “Am I a Christian?”
The deeper question is:
❓ “Can people see Christ through the way I live?”
Do my words reflect the truth and love of Christ? Do I treat others with justice, compassion, and love? Am I honest and faithful even when no one is watching? Is there holiness, faithfulness, and self-control in my relationships? Does God have the first place in my life?
🌍 We live in the world, but we should not live according to the values of the world.
The Word of God must be our standard.
That is why the practical principles found in the Old Testament Law continue to examine our lives even today. They ask us:
- ❓ Am I honest?
- ❓ Am I just?
- ❓ Am I responsible for my actions?
- ❓ Do I think about how my actions affect others?
- ❓ Do I show compassion to those who are weak and in need of protection?
- ❓ Does my life reflect the holiness of the God whom I claim to worship?
- 📜 The Law shows us the holiness of God.
- 💔 The Law reveals our sinful nature.
- ✝️ Jesus Christ provides salvation.
- 🔥 The Holy Spirit enables us to live a transformed life.
Therefore, we should never use grace as an excuse to live carelessly.
We should never say:
“I am under grace, so it does not matter how I live.”
Instead, we should say:
❤️ “Because I have received such great grace from the One who saved me, I desire to live a life that pleases Him.”
The Law gives us a picture of God’s righteous standard. It reveals that we cannot save ourselves through our own works. The work of salvation that we could never accomplish was completed by Jesus Christ.
God’s grace now calls us to live as His people.
- 📖 The Law gives guidance.
- ✝️ Grace provides salvation.
- 🔥 The Holy Spirit gives us the strength to live for God.
🌿 Our lives should show that we truly belong to Christ.
May God help us to understand the Word of God correctly. May we never reduce Christianity merely to attending church or carrying a Christian name.
May the Word of God examine our lives. May the grace of Jesus Christ save us and transform us. May the Holy Spirit help us not to live differently in order to earn salvation, but to live differently because we have received salvation.
✨ We are saved by grace, and that grace calls us to live a holy life.
