When There Is Enough
Exodus 36
After the people willingly gave for the construction of the tabernacle, the work began. Exodus 36 shows us something beautiful: God had stirred the hearts of His people, provided the necessary resources, equipped skilled workers, and now everyone came together to do the work according to His instructions.
But there is one detail that especially caught my attention.
The people kept bringing materials until the craftsmen came to Moses and said, “The people bring much more than enough for doing the work that the LORD has commanded us to do.” (Exodus 36:5)
So Moses gave an instruction throughout the camp:
“Let no man or woman do anything more for the contribution for the sanctuary.”
– Exodus 36:6 ESV
They had enough. And when there was enough, they stopped receiving.
Faithfulness Is Knowing What God Has Asked Us to Do
The people were generous, and their hearts were willing. But generosity alone was not the goal. The purpose was to provide what was needed for the work God had commanded.
This reminds me that even something good can become unhelpful when it goes beyond what God has actually entrusted to us.
Faithfulness is not simply doing more and more. It is doing what God has given us to do, in the way He has instructed us to do it.
God Equips People for His Work
Exodus 36:1-2 again highlights Bezalel, Oholiab, and the skilled workers.
God had given them wisdom and skill for the work, and those whose hearts were stirred came forward to use what God had given them.
This is encouraging because God’s work does not depend on one type of ability.
Some can teach. Some can encourage. Some can organize. Some can build. Some can give. Some can serve quietly behind the scenes.
What matters is not whether our ability looks impressive, but whether we are willing to place what God has given us into His hands.
God’s Work Must Follow God’s Pattern
The rest of the chapter contains many details about curtains, coverings, frames, bars, pillars, the veil, and the entrance.
At first, these details may seem repetitive. But they show something important.
The craftsmen were not simply building something beautiful according to their own imagination. They were carrying out what God had commanded Moses.
This is a valuable reminder for us.
Good intentions are not a substitute for obedience.
In Christian life, it is possible to become so focused on what we want to build, achieve, or accomplish that we forget to ask whether we are following God’s Word.
God is not merely interested in the activity we do for Him. He cares about faithfulness to His instructions.
When God Provides, Use It Faithfully
There is also something beautiful in the way Exodus 35 and 36 connect.
In chapter 35, the hearts of the people were stirred, and they willingly brought what they had.
In chapter 36, those resources were received, organized, and used for the purpose for which they were given.
The whole process was purposeful.
This challenges me personally. Whatever God has placed in my hands – my time, abilities, resources, opportunities, relationships, or responsibilities – I should not treat them as though they belong to me without accountability.
They are opportunities to serve Him faithfully.
And when there is enough for the purpose God has given, faithfulness may sometimes mean knowing when to say, “It is enough.”
A Faithful Heart
Exodus 36 is not only about constructing the tabernacle. It is about people responding to God with willing hearts and faithful hands.
The same God who stirred their hearts in chapter 35 was now seeing their willingness expressed through action in chapter 36.
That is something I want to remember.
A stirred heart should become an obedient life.
God may give me resources. He may give me skills. He may give me opportunities. He may open doors for service.
My responsibility is to respond faithfully, use what He has entrusted to me wisely, and follow His Word rather than my own ideas.
Lord, thank You for everything You have placed in my hands. Give me a willing heart to serve You and wisdom to use what You have entrusted to me faithfully. Help me not to be driven by my own desires or the desire to do more, but to remain faithful to what You have asked me to do. Teach me to follow Your Word even when my own ideas seem attractive. May my abilities, resources, time, and opportunities all be used for Your glory.
