📖 A Thought from My Personal Meditation (Exodus 20:7–11)
Today, while meditating on Exodus chapter 20, I was reminded of the importance of honouring the name of the Lord and keeping a day dedicated to Him.
The third commandment says:
“You shall not take the name of the LORD your God in vain, for the LORD will not hold him guiltless who takes His name in vain.”
Exodus 20:7
As Christians, we use the name of God, the name of Jesus Christ, and the name of the Holy Spirit many times in our conversations. But this commandment makes us examine ourselves:
Do we always use the name of God with reverence and sincerity?
Sometimes, even in ordinary conversations, we may use God’s name without truly thinking about what we are saying.
For example, when someone asks us, “How are you?” we may casually reply, “I am fine by God’s grace.”
Indeed, we are well by the grace of God. But do we truly understand and mean what we are saying every time we use those words?
God tells us not to take His name in vain.
Therefore, when we make a promise, give an assurance, or speak about something, we should not unnecessarily use the name of God if we do not truly mean what we are saying.
The name of God is holy. We must use it with reverence, sincerity, and truth.
The fourth commandment is related to the Sabbath:
“Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy.”
Exodus 20:8
God commanded the Israelites to work for six days and keep one day holy and dedicated to Him.
As Christians, we understand the Sabbath differently in the light of the New Testament. We are not saved by keeping a particular day. However, the principle of setting aside time to rest, worship God, and fellowship with His people remains important.
Many Christians traditionally gather for worship on Sunday.
But we need to ask ourselves:
- Am I going to church merely for the sake of going?
- Am I truly honouring God through my worship and fellowship?
- Is the day we dedicate to the Lord truly a day of rest, worship, and honouring God?
These thoughts are not meant for us to examine other people.
They are meant to make us examine our own lives.
When I read these commandments, I see them like a mirror before me. God’s Word helps me to examine my own life and see where I am falling short.
So today, let us honestly examine ourselves.
- Are we honouring the name of the Lord with sincerity?
- Are we setting aside time to worship Him and honour Him?
- Are our worship and fellowship merely religious activities, or are they expressions of a genuine relationship with God?
May the Lord help us to honour His holy name in everything we say and do, and to worship Him with a sincere heart.
