Exodus 24
⚖️ The Blood of the Covenant
Exodus 24 marks a very significant moment in Israel’s history. In Exodus 20–23, God gave His laws and commandments to His people. In Exodus 24, that covenant is formally confirmed.
The people respond with one voice:
“All the words that the LORD has spoken we will do.”
Exodus 24:3
Moses then offers sacrifices and sprinkles the blood upon the people, calling it “the blood of the covenant.”
As I meditated on this passage, one question came to my mind:
Why was blood necessary to establish a covenant?
The Bible tells us:
“For the life of the flesh is in the blood.”
Leviticus 17:11
A covenant is much deeper than a contract.
A contract says:
“If you do this, I will do that.”
But a covenant says:
“I am binding my life to this covenant.”
In ancient times, covenants were often sealed with blood. Animals were sacrificed, and the message was clear:
“May what happened to this sacrifice happen to me if I break this covenant.”
We see a beautiful picture of this in Genesis 15. God instructed Abraham to cut the animals in half and place the pieces opposite each other. Normally, both covenant partners would walk between the pieces.
But Abraham did not walk through them.
Instead, after the sun had set and darkness had fallen, a smoking fire pot and a flaming torch passed between the pieces (Genesis 15:17). It was a powerful picture of God Himself taking upon Himself the full responsibility of the covenant.
Through this act, God was declaring:
“If this covenant is broken, I Myself will bear the consequences.”
Humanity failed in its covenant relationship with God. Yet God remained faithful.
At the cross, Jesus Christ took upon Himself the penalty of our sins. He became the sacrifice. He gave His own life for us. In doing so, Jesus took upon Himself the responsibility for the covenant that humanity had broken.
That is why, at the Last Supper, Jesus said:
“This cup is the new covenant in My blood.”
Luke 22:20
All the sacrifices of the Old Testament were pointing forward to Jesus Christ.
Through His blood, the New Covenant was established. His blood secured forgiveness of sins and opened the way for us to enter God’s presence.
Exodus 24 is therefore not merely a historical event in Israel’s story. It is also a beautiful foreshadowing of the greater covenant that would one day be established through Jesus Christ.
This passage reminds us:
Sin is serious. Covenant is costly. And God’s love is beyond measure.
Even when we fail, God remains faithful. Even when we break the covenant, we see at the cross a God who was willing to pay the price Himself.
🙏 May God help us to treasure the precious blood of Christ through which we have received forgiveness, salvation, and eternal life.

Let us remember in our prayers our brothers and sisters who are suffering because of the floods and heavy rains.
“God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.”
Psalm 46:1
May the Lord comfort and strengthen those who have lost their homes and possessions and those living in fear and uncertainty. During this difficult time, may God’s peace, protection, and loving care rest upon every family.
