Exodus 21:28–32
⚖️ The Price of a Slave
As I continued reading Exodus 21, one verse deeply touched my heart.
“If the ox gores a male or female slave, the owner shall pay their master thirty shekels of silver…”
Exodus 21:32
According to the Law of Moses, thirty shekels of silver was the compensation that had to be paid for the death of a slave.
Centuries later, my Lord Jesus Christ—the King of kings and Lord of lords—was valued at almost the same price.
“What are you willing to give me if I deliver Him to you?” So they counted out for him thirty pieces of silver.”
Matthew 26:15
How painful it is to think that the Creator of all things was valued at the price of a slave.
Yet this was not by accident.
The prophet Zechariah had already foretold it:
“So they weighed out my wages, thirty pieces of silver… ‘Throw it to the potter.'”
Zechariah 11:12–13
Matthew tells us that this was fulfilled in the betrayal of Jesus and the purchase of the potter’s field (Matthew 27:3–10). This event also echoes themes found in the prophecies of Jeremiah.
Centuries earlier, the prophet Isaiah portrayed the Messiah as the Suffering Servant.
“He was despised and rejected by mankind… like a lamb that is led to the slaughter.”
Isaiah 53:3, 7
Jesus willingly took the place of a servant. He was rejected, betrayed, and sold—not because He was worthless, but because we were priceless to Him.
The thirty pieces of silver remind me of another truth.
“Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus… He made Himself of no reputation, taking the form of a servant… He humbled Himself and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.”
Philippians 2:5–8
If my Master chose the path of humility, how much more should I?
In my family, in my workplace, in the church, and wherever God places me, may my words, my attitude, and my actions reflect the humility of Christ.
Pride hides Christ, but true humility reveals Him.
This is my prayer today:
“Lord, give me the humility of Jesus Christ. Let people see Your character in my words, my actions, and my life. May I not merely speak about Christ, but reflect Him in the way I live every day.”
Our calling is not merely to bear the name Christian, but to become more like Christ. As the Holy Spirit transforms us into His likeness, may people increasingly see Jesus in us.
