Exodus 21:12–14
⚖️ The God Who Knows Our Hearts and the Intentions Behind Our Actions
As I continued my meditation on Exodus chapter 21, I was drawn to these verses, where God makes a clear distinction between intentional murder and unintentional killing.
📖 In Exodus 21:12–14, God makes a clear distinction between intentional murder and an unintentional death.
A person who deliberately killed someone and a person who caused another person’s death without planning it or lying in wait to attack them were treated differently. For a person involved in an unintentional death, God provided a place to which he could flee for refuge.
God does not judge only by what happened. He knows the intention, circumstances, and heart behind every action.
⚖️ There is a difference between deliberate evil and an unintentional mistake.
This should make us very careful before we accuse, judge, or condemn others.
A mistake may need correction, and wrongdoing may have consequences. But we should not treat an unintentional mistake as though it were a deliberate act of evil.
🙏 Before accusing someone, we should ask ourselves:
Do I really know the truth?
Do I know the person’s intention?
Am I judging based on facts—or assumptions?
The Bible calls Satan “the accuser” (Revelation 12:10). Therefore, we must be careful that, through false accusations, careless judgments, anger, and bitterness, we do not unknowingly take up the work of the accuser.
Sometimes, people are deeply wounded by false accusations from family members, fellow believers, church members, fellow workers, and sometimes even from immature spiritual leadership.
Some have become discouraged in their faith because they were judged without being properly understood, and some have even fallen away from the faith.
Therefore, we must be very careful—especially with those who are new in faith and still growing spiritually.
Our careless words can become a stumbling block to someone who is trying to follow Christ.
❤️ We must correct with truth, but also with love.
I also confess that I need the Lord’s correction in this area.
🙏 Lord, help me to be careful with my words, judgments, and accusations. Help me not to become an accuser of others. Give me wisdom to know the truth, humility to examine my own heart, and grace to correct others with love.
🏃♂️ Jesus Christ—Our Refuge
A person who caused someone’s death unintentionally was given a place to which he could flee for refuge.
This points us to Jesus Christ. ✝️
We are all sinners. Some sins are committed deliberately, while other wrongs may happen through ignorance, weakness, or carelessness.
But whatever our condition, we all need a refuge.
❤️ Jesus Christ is our true Refuge.
When we are guilty, He offers forgiveness.
When we are broken, He offers restoration.
When we are burdened by our failures, He offers grace.
“God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.”
Psalm 46:1
The Law reveals the seriousness of sin and the reality of justice. But our ultimate refuge is not the Law—it is Jesus Christ.
“There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.”
Romans 8:1
✨ God knows our hearts and the intentions behind our actions. Therefore, let us be careful before accusing others. And when we ourselves fail, let us run to Jesus Christ, our true Refuge.
