Purity of Heart and Honesty in Every Dealing (Exodus 20:14–15)

God looks past the outward act into the secret places of the heart. These two commandments examine our thoughts, our eyes and our everyday dealings.

📖 A Thought from My Personal Meditation (Exodus 20:14–15)

Today, while meditating on Exodus chapter 20, I continued to examine the commandments of God and their application to our lives.

The next commandment says:

“You shall not commit adultery.”

Exodus 20:14

As Christians, we may think that this commandment only refers to physically committing adultery.

However, Jesus taught us to look deeper into the condition of our hearts.

We need to ask ourselves:

  • Are there impure thoughts in our hearts?
  • Are we looking at another person with impure thoughts and desires?

The commandment is not only about our outward actions. God also looks at our hearts, our thoughts, and our intentions.

Our society often considers something wrong only when it becomes an outward action. But God looks much deeper. He sees what happens in the secret places of our hearts and minds.

Therefore, we need the grace of God to live with purity.

May the Lord help us to keep our hearts and minds pure, and to live with purity in our thoughts, our eyes, and our actions.

The next commandment says:

“You shall not steal.”

Exodus 20:15

When we hear the word stealing, we may immediately think about taking something that belongs to another person.

But this commandment also makes us examine our everyday life.

Are we taking something that does not rightfully belong to us?

In our financial transactions and dealings with others, are we taking more than what we deserve?

For example, if someone is supposed to give us ₹10, are we taking ₹11 or ₹12 and keeping the extra amount without returning it?

Even such things can reveal the condition of our hearts.

We should not take anything that belongs to others.

We should not take more than what we truly deserve.

We should be honest and faithful in all our dealings.

We should learn to be content with what God has given us and not try to gain something through dishonesty.

As we meditate on these commandments, we understand that God’s Word is not merely a list of rules with which we examine other people.

It is a mirror through which we must examine our own hearts.

Let us ask the Lord to search our hearts, show us the areas where we are failing, give us the grace to repent, and strengthen us to obey His Word.

May the Lord help us to live with purity in our thoughts, honesty in our dealings, and integrity in every area of our lives.

Have a blessed day!

God bless you all.
